Houndstooth Balmacaan Coat

The balmacaan coat, named after Balmacaan House in Scotland, offers a softer silhouette with its raglan sleeves and relaxed fit, making it ideal for those seeking comfort without compromising style. This particular model, designed by our good friend Brian Sacawa of He Spoke Style fame, breathes new life into a nearly forgotten outerwear classic. Traditionally, the balmacaan is a long, loose-fitting coat crafted from thick gabardine or heavy tweed, distinguished by its raglan sleeves, Prussian collar, and concealed button closures that extend to the neck.

This version, made from a large houndstooth-patterned fabric by W. Bill, remains faithful to the original design while introducing modern touches. We’ve slightly shortened the length to fall just below the knee for a more contemporary look and added a quilted Thinsulate lining for added warmth. The coat also includes two outer pockets, two inner pockets, a single vent, and buttoned throat and sleeve tabs, enhancing both its functionality and style.

Now that you've received your try-on garment, it's time to assess the fit and make any necessary corrections -- this is the first step to achieving your personalized custom fit. I'm about to personally walk you through the entire assessment process, but first let's make sure that you have been sent the correct try-on garments for you. Watch this introductory video before beginning your fit assessment.

Each piece in the shop has been thoughtfully curated by the Michael Andrews team. While displayed in our recommended styling, each garment can be customized to suit your personal preferences.

02. Sizing

Create or Update Your Pattern

EXISTING CLIENTS: If you are an existing client with a pattern on file, we will use it to craft your garments. Need adjustments? Let us know, and we can arrange an in-person or video consultation to update your pattern.

NEW CLIENTS: If you are a new client ordering from outside the New York area, we will send you a try-on garment, typically within two weeks. Once you receive it, we’ll schedule a video fitting with one of our expert stylists to review the fit and make any necessary adjustments.

After the initial try-on fitting, for bespoke orders, we will create a prototype garment specifically for you to further refine the exact shape of your pattern.

03. Make

Crafted to Your Precise Measurements

Once we have determined the correct sizing for your garment, it will be made precisely to your measurements. When it’s ready, we will notify you to schedule an in-person or virtual fitting. Any necessary adjustments will be made at no additional cost, following our standard alterations policy.

04. Enjoy

Receive Your Custom Clothing

In about four to six weeks after your try-on or prototype fitting, you will receive your final garment(s). Try not to gloat too much as your friends envy your new clothes.
