There has never been a better time for flannel and we’re not just talking about the weather. Flannel fabric serves as the perfect bridge between smart and casual attire. Perhaps you’ve already gone back to the office or plan to return soon – do you know what to wear? Chances are your office is a little more relaxed now, but you still want to dress appropriately. Flannel fabrics sit comfortably in this space – less dressy than traditional suits and slacks, but more refined than jeans or chinos. Not to mention, they’re extremely soft, comfortable and warm. It’s like wearing your pajamas to work! Or, if you’re still working from home, then perhaps you’ll want to consider a pair of bespoke flannel pajamas. We make those too.

Worsted vs. Woolen
Not all flannels are created equal…

Flannel fabrics generally fall into two main categories: worsted (think fine suit) and woolen (think comfy sweater). Although some qualities – like Saxony (technically a soft tweed) – may be both, we’ll leave the non-binary fabric discussion for another day.

So which is better? Well, that depends on the type of garment you want and your preference for how it should wear. Fibers used to create worsted flannels are “combed” – just like the fine wools of traditional suits – to remove the shorter filaments before they are spun into yarn. The result is a strong, smooth yarn with a polished finish. By contrast, woolen flannels are “carded”, a process that allows the shorter fibers to remain. This results in cloth that’s not quite as strong but is uniquely warm and has that soft, fuzzy finish we often associate with flannels.

So which one is right for you? Lighter weight flannels tend to perform better when made from worsted yarn whereas woolen flannels generally favor a heavier weight. So if you’re someone who runs hot, consider worsted flannels and a half lining in your jacket. Alternatively, if you are looking for warmth and appreciate the mélange effect that comes from thicker fibers, then we recommend woolen flannels in no less than 11 oz. (you’ll want the weight to keep the crease in trousers).

Drink It In
The Flannel Cocktail

This drink may be served cold, but like it’s name suggests this mix of Cognac and apple cider is sure to keep you warm…

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 ounce Cognac
  • 1/4 ounce allspice dram
  • 1/4 ounce orange juice
  • 1/2 ounce apple cider syrup*
  • Garnish: orange peel

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until your hands hurt (or the drink is very cold).
  2. Strain into a glass over ice.
  3. Garnish with an orange peel.

*Apple cider syrup: In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups freshly pressed apple cider to a boil. Reduce heat and continue to simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until liquid has reduced to 1 cup (about 1 hour). Remove from heat and let cool. Will keep, refrigerated, for up to 2 weeks.
